| Organising an event, whether it's a corporate dinner,
conference, outdoor fundraising event or wedding reception, is both time
consuming and costly. To then face the prospect of something going wrong
is your worst nightmare. You've probably spent months in planning and
organising the venue, caterers, entertainment, etc., and the guests may
already be on their way when disaster strikes. Or something goes wrong
once your event is underway. Not only do you see all your hard work go
to waste but you probably lose financially too.
Of course, you hope it will all run smoothly but how do you protect yourself from the unthinkable happening? One increasingly popular option is to take out insurance to cover a specific event. So, to help you decide whether you need to consider insuring your event, here are some of the more common types of cover available: Total Cancellation or Abandonment Highly recommended for outdoor events, such as fetes and outdoor fun days. Severe weather conditions in the days leading up to the event can mean there may be no chance of even beginning the build-up process due to waterlogged ground conditions and the event has to be cancelled. However, it is worth bearing in mind that insurers may provide remedial action expenses to enable the event to proceed by covering the costs of measures such as an emergency portable roadway. This type of cover can also include non-appearance of key persons or acts without whom the event cannot proceed. Rainfall Affected Cover This is again important for outdoor events, when the event goes ahead but because of wet conditions on the day, the attendance (and income if a fundraising event) is reduced. The period of insurance selected is usually the hours when people make the decision to attend or not. For example, if the gates for an outdoor event open at 11.00am and the event finishes at 5.00pm, you might cover the period from 8.00am to 1.00pm in case it rains during this crucial time. Equipment Cover This covers items such as marquees, generators, chairs and tables, staging, lighting, audio visual equipment, etc. against loss or damage.
